How the Tempo Boom Momentum Score works
The Tempo Boom Momentum Score measures how fast public attention around an artist is growing, using daily Wikipedia pageviews as the signal.
Why Wikipedia
When someone hears a new artist and wants to know who they are, they look them up. Wikipedia pageviews are a public, free, daily record of exactly that. They lag TikTok and streaming slightly, but they're hard to game, cover every genre equally, and capture curiosity rather than passive listening.
How it's calculated
- We pull daily pageviews for every artist on the index from the Wikimedia Pageviews API.
- The score is the percentage change between the first and last point of a 5-day moving average of the artist's last 30 days of pageviews (with missing days interpolated and single-day spikes capped at 1.6× the 95th-percentile day + 3), multiplied by a confidence weight that scales the result down for artists averaging fewer than 25 views a day.
- Artists are ranked within their genre by this score. An artist with 3,000 daily views and a +80% score ranks above one with 50,000 views and +5%.
- Noise floor: an artist averaging under 25 daily views over the last 30 days gets a proportionally reduced score (5 views a day means 20% of the raw change), and a Wikipedia page is only tracked once it has 200+ days of history and has peaked above 40 views in a single day.
- Data refreshes daily. Genre rankings and the weekly "Rising Artists" charts are snapshots of that day's scores.
What it isn't
It's not a popularity ranking, a streaming chart, or a quality judgment. A high score means attention is accelerating, not that an artist is big. That's the point — it surfaces artists before they're big.
Who's on the index
289 emerging artists across 9 genres, added by hand. An artist needs an English Wikipedia page to be tracked; we keep a watchlist of artists who don't have one yet.
